The strlcpy should not be used because it doesn't limit the source length. As linus says, it's a completely useless function if you can't implicitly trust the source string - but that is almost always why people think they should use it! All in all the BSD function will lead some potential bugs. But the strscpy doesn't require reading memory from the src string beyond the specified "count" bytes, and since the return value is easier to error-check than strlcpy()'s. In addition, the implementation is robust to the string changing out from underneath it, unlike the current strlcpy() implementation. Thus, We prefer using strscpy instead of strlcpy. Linux kernel

There are several guides for kernel developers and users. These guides can
be rendered in a number of formats, like HTML and PDF. Please read
Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst first.
In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or
``make pdfdocs``. The formatted documentation can also be read online at:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/
There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory,
several of them using the Restructured Text markup notation.
Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the
requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about
the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
