Documentation/core-api/printk-formats.rst specifically recommends using the promoted-to-type's format flag. Also, as per C11 6.3.1.1: (https://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg14/www/docs/n1548.pdf) `If an int can represent all values of the original type ..., the value is converted to an int; otherwise, it is converted to an unsigned int. These are called the integer promotions.` Since the argument is a u16 it will get promoted to an int and thus it is most accurate to use the %x format specifier here. It should be noted that the `#06` formatting sugar does not alter the promotion rules. Linux kernel
============
There are several guides for kernel developers and users. These guides can
be rendered in a number of formats, like HTML and PDF. Please read
Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst first.
In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or
``make pdfdocs``. The formatted documentation can also be read online at:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/
There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory,
several of them using the Restructured Text markup notation.
Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the
requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about
the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
